United in Action

Few days ago the world celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It’s a day set aside to sensitize society on the need to create a sustainable environment, one that would be more accommodating to suit all individuals including those living with disabilities.

This year’s theme, “United in action to rescue and achieve the sustainable development goals for, with, and by persons with disabilities,” reinforces the commitment to inclusivity and equal participation in society.

The day is in alignment with the objectives set by the United Nations and the World Health Organization, which aims to promote the International Day of Persons with Disabilities established in 1992. It aims at educating the society about the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities across all spheres of life.

The key objectives of this day are to increase awareness of the challenges being faced by people with disabilities, enlightening communities on the need to be more attentive to them. The day seeks to encourage communities and work spaces to embrace people living with disabilities not just by words but by creating an environment that is easily accessible to everyone.

This day is also used to celebrate the strength and courage of these persons; creating opportunities for people to see how talented they are and also to recognize their achievements and various contributions to society.

Disabled people in some African countries still don’t have access to a lot of equipment or facilities to help them navigate public spaces, a problem that has not been taken seriously and needs more awareness.

In commemorating this day, let us join the global efforts to raise awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and work towards breaking down barriers in the society.
