In the North, social media influencers are expected to talk about issues of impact e.g. kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, illiteracy, poverty, girl child education, almajiranci and other peculiar and pertinent issues to the north. The story went round in the tabloids sometime ago about an 18-year-old boy who strangled his mother in her sleep in the dead of night, then proceeded to rape her corpse and leave her for two days as a ritual for money! Again, I also read somewhere that a man killed a little girl for a money ritual. Recently, we heard the case of "Ini Umoren". An innocent graduate who was lured, gang-raped and killed. Her case led to discovering many other dead bodies (mostly females) in some parts of Nigeria.

Ethnic jingoists and chauvinists should be ashamed and scurry in darkness, same with LGBTQ people. The only thing I owe myself when I am in a foreign place is to work extra hard and excel just like them or better. If a British person is not ashamed of the evils his grandfathers committed against African people, why should I be ashamed of the crimes committed by some Nigerian people?

What to do when a scammer calls

Before July 2020, I had no idea that criminals had devised a way of getting you to part with your money by handing it to them. When the guy from the bank called to tell me he was my account officer and needed to clarify things with me concerning my finances, I believed him. I had just woken up from sleep, so I was still in a state of half-consciousness; I also had no idea that scam calls were a thing. Whenever I went to the bank, I neglected to read fliers warning against handing your information to criminals posing as bank officers. In hindsight, I wish I did.

I just finished watching a news report on Al Jazeera that showed Cobalt as the new gold because electronic gadgets would soon become greater in number than anything else made by man. (All the vital parts and chips in our devices, from phones, computers, and headphones, are made with Cobalt). Congo has the highest world deposit of Cobalt for those who do not know. So instead of making me (an African) happy, the report made me sad. And here is why.

Armed men storm into schools and pick up unsuspecting students along with their teachers or caretakers, then proceed to ask for massive amounts of money in exchange for their return.
